Interview with Ming from Homeclub for Worldwide Festivalby roadburn on 05 May 2009 tags: interviews By Jonathan Fong audioreload: Hi Ming, what’s been going on with you? What have you been keeping busy with? ming: As you probably know, besides being a resident at HOME, I’m also actively involved with most things that occur there from flyer designs to booking DJs. Right now we’ve got our hands full with Brookes Brothers, AC Slater, Klever & Craze and Le Castlevania all playing within two months of each other so basically it’s been quite hectic. Outside of the club I’ve just started to produce a bit of drum and bass and electro, so hopefully I’ll have a few things to play at the worldwide festival this week! audioreload: Share with us how you got into DJ-ing. ming: I’ve always been somewhat a musical person, having learnt piano for 4 years, so when I first had a taste of London nightlife I was completely taken aback by the DJ. I remember Andy C was playing at Fabric (in London), and suddenly he would tease in a song and I’d suddenly stop dancing and grab my friend saying ‘oh my god, did you hear that…’. Then I decided that’s what I want to do so I brought a very cheap set up and two records and practiced every day, and until now I still practice everyday. audioreload: What are some of the biggest influences in music? Which genre of dance music do you find yourself having the strongest affinity to and why? ming: I’m a drum & bass boy at heart! It’s what I grew up to so I’ll always treasure the memories that go along with it. But since I’ve been in Singapore I’ve gotten into techno, dubstep and electro. I could list hundreds of artists that influence my music, but in terms of my playing style, Andy C and Diplo. audioreload: It’s your first time playing at the Worldwide Festival. What acts are you most stoked on catching and are there any heroes or legends that you’re excited to be sharing the stage with? ming: It’s a blessing to be able to share the stage with so many great acts at such a young age. Giles Peterson, the Crunchtime Crew, and Jack Beats would be my personal ones to watch but with so many great acts I’m spoilt for choice! audioreload: You’ll be playing the WF’s Club Invasion session at Home Club as well as the WF Beach Weekender. Any survival tips or advice to give to those who have never attended an outdoors beach festival event? ming: Red Bull and lots of alcohol! Its gonna be a very tiring weekend but these type of events don’t happen so often. My best advice is make an excuse and get fucked up! Just be safe and enjoy the music! :p |
