Album: Myself

Artist: Melanie Subono

Rating: 3/5

Written by: Mok Cui Yin

Indonesian punk rock star Melanie Subono’s second studio album, “Myself” is an interesting album with a bilingual — Bahasa Indonesia and English — tracklist that spans a range of moods from melancholy to angst to perky aplomb, and explores genres such as disco, punk-pop, rock-and-roll, and pop.

Just before Electrico’s We Satellites album launch party at Zouk on 11th July, Audioreload snatched some time to pop the band a few questions about their new album and other recent developments.

Melanie Subono

Most people I know would attend this year’s SingFest because of big names like Jason Mraz, Panic! At The Disco, and Alicia Keys, and maybe Rick Astley (assuming you are old enough to remember who he is).

Somewhere along the artiste line-up, though, is a name that may not be very familiar with most Singaporeans. Melanie Subono is an Indonesian rock singer with a nomination for Best Solo Performer at the IKON ASEAN Awards 2008, an AMI Award for Best Rock Performance, and two solo albums and a few other collaborations under her belt.

Come 2nd August, she will be making her international debut at SingFest, no less. To find out more about her and her music, Audioreload got in touch with Melanie over the phone a couple of weeks ago for a quick morning chat.

Drumfest 2008

Wendy- Between
Between here and then - Wendy Phua

There is little reason to understate the immensity and diversity of Wendy Phua's musical journeys, as all one needs is a little time and separation from the world outside to fully appreciate the spectrum of what she has to say. Too easy to box in as a skilled bassist, and too careless to describe as a seasoned performer, Wendy's recent work on the bass guitar has transcended beyond performativity to one of patient story-telling.

Nuance EP

Nuance has been coined as a three-months band (no, not 7th month band, although the timing couldn't have been better). Why? Because Donald Pan, the frontman who lives in Melbourne with his wife and kids is only back in Singapore for 3 months out of a year.

Nevertheless, passionate about their music, within that short span of time they have produced their debut EP as an enhancedCD with accompanying music videos!

Someone mentioned brooding eyebrows and sexy facial hair. Well sexy or not, you can decide for yourself. See http://fearstrikesmankind.blogspot.com

Or if you just need an excuse to celebrate and drink beer, join Nuance at their album launch at Home Club on 18 July. Party starts at 10pm!
